Located in the central south of Guangdong and in the west of the Pearl River Delta, Jiangmen Municipality has a land area of over 9,500 km2 and a resident population of 4 million. As a famous homeland of overseas Chinese, it has under its jurisdiction the three districts of Pengjiang, Jianghai and Xinhui and the four county-level cities of Taishan, Kaiping, Enping and Heshan.
With its numerous waters, marine sights, primeval forests and natural hot springs, Jiangmen is an ecologically beautiful region surrounded by hills and waters. ?Only 60 km away from Guangzhou and about two hours’ ride away from Hong Kong and Macao by hydrofoil, Jiangmen is a geographically favored city.
Jiangmen, the central city of Wuyi region, is known as the capital of this homeland of overseas Chinese. It has set up luxurious hotels like the five-star Yucca Hotel and Palace Hotel and a number of other star-rated hotels. They offer all-round service to every tourist to Jiangmen.? The Long Dike along the Pengjiang River is an old commercial district of historical value. Its long row of terrace houses combining both Chinese and Western architectural elements resonate with rich cultural content and flavor characteristic of this homeland of overseas Chinese in the South of China and constitute the most representative streetscape of Jiangmen.
Jiangmen Wuyi region has a time-honored history and numerous places of historical interest offering a feast for the eyes of visitors. Over 700 years ago, at Yinzhou Lake near Yamen estuary of the West River, the tragic Battle of Yamen occurred, presenting a most heroic and stirring scene featuring national integrity. Wen Tianxiang’s two famous lines “What man is ever immune from death? Leave me with a loyal heart shining in the pages of history” are a testament to that heavy moment of history. The spectacular Yamen Cannon Terrace is the largest surviving single cannon platform in coastal Guangdong.
Jiangmen is also a remarkable place which has produced a number of great minds. Chen Baisha, the famous Neo-Confucian master philosopher in the Ming Dynasty, is known as the “No. One Man” in Guangdong. Baishal Temple used to be his residence. Liang Qichao, a main advocator and one of the leaders of the modern reformist movement at the end of Qing Dynasty, was a famous statesman, thinker and writer. He was the founder of modern Chinese literary and historical theories.
As a famous homeland of overseas Chinese, Jiangmen has an overseas population of 3.8 million dispersed in 107 countries and regions. Out of solicitude for their homeland, generation after generation of overseas Chinese endured countless hardships to nourish their ancestral land. At the suggestion and under the leadership of Chen Yixi (Chin Yee Hee), the first private railway of China—Sunning Railway was successfully built in Jiangmen Wuyi region.
The history of the overseas Chinese from Wuyi region represents he history of overseas Chinese loving their home, their township and their country. From this land emerged a number of outstanding overseas Chinese. Among them were Feng Ru, the first airplane designer and aviator of China, Zhang Ruifang, the first female Chinese aviator, Situ Metang, a famous leader of overseas Chinese in Americas, and Li Tiefu, a Chinese American who was known as the first Chinese oil painter.
Common history, shared geographical and ethnic connections,and overseas influence endow Jiangmen with a rich and unique culture.
Diaolou. If architecture is solidified music, then the diaolou towers in Jiangmen Wuyi region are a solidified cultural musical movement. They are the most direct and forceful interpretation of Jiangmen’s reputation as China’ No. 1 Homeland of Overseas Chinese. The towers are dispersed in the four districts of Xinhui, Taishan, Kaiping and Enping, with Kaiping as the most concentrated region of dialou towers. Combining western and Chinese architectural elements and with the imagination of the owners and builders, they present a unique architectural style and decorative art, dispersed across the countryside. An expert once wrote that the Kaiping diaolou fully displayed the confidence, openness, and inclusiveness of the overseas Chinese when they were absorbing advanced foreign culture on their own. They are like gems sprinkled across the fields of Wuyi region.
Ruishi Tower, honored as the No. 1 Tower of Kaiping, is the best-preserved one. “A western-style tower standing in the Chinese countryside” really takes you by surprise.
Today, the towers of Kaiping are catching the attention of the world. In 2006, they were listed by the Chinese State Council as China’s site applying for inscription onto the World Cultural Heritage. Once the application is successful, the cultural gems hidden deep in the countryside will be well-known to the world.
Jiangmen Wuyi region is abundant in hot springs. From Xinhui all the way to Taishan, Kaiping, and Enping, over a dozen hot springs spout from the ground and form a rare belt of hot springs. They have won Jiangmen Wuyi another two fine reputations:? China’s First Land of Hot Springs and China’s Geothermal Garden. On this belt have already been developed a number of hot spring resorts, each with their special characteristics.
Gudou Hot Spring Resort, the most graceful, is built at the foot of the Gudou Mountain with range after range of hills clothed in emerald-green. ?The accomodation buildings here are in the Tang style. The fountains are characterized by alternation of salty and fresh water and are favored by visitors from Hong Kong and Macao.
Jingjiang Hot Spring Resort is famed to have China’s first Fountain of Action. Its water is rich in silicic acid, fluorine, and radon. But what is most recommendable about it is its ingenious surfing-style hot springs, hot water rafting and a waterfall with alternating cold and hot water. Thus Jingjiang resort is full of motion and is the most stimulating one.
Jinshan Hot Springs resort, a national AAAA holiday resort, is known as the “Second Hot Spring” in the world and is the first developed hot spring resort in Jiangmen Wuyi. In the resort there is a large expanse of exposed hot stream bed from where spout numerous fountains. The mist and clouds in the twilight is striking.
The hot springs at Didu Resort, with their clear and smooth water, contain numerous elements beneficial to health and are recommended by the World Nutrition Organization as a retreat for nourishing health. The resort features traditional Chinese landscape culture: the pools adopt the traditional Chinese eight-trigram pattern and the buildings are in a landscape style.
Taishan Sunrise Hot Springs Resort has a long history. It is housed in a luxurious hotel with large physical therapy hot springs. It is an interesting world of amusement with a hot water swimming center and hot water surfing.
Fudu Hot Spring Resort offers a service item unique in China—hot springs with falling snow. In this southern land of China visitors can enjoy a fascinating world of snow and ice.
Within Jianmen’s terriotry of 9,500 km2, the natural ecology is very well preserved and it presents a view of “emerald hills, clear waters, blue sky and green land” and is an eye-catching “oasis” in the Pearl River Delta. Eco-tour on this oasis is another bright spot of Jiangmen’s tourism.
Jiangmen is also a beautiful coastal city with a marine area of over 30,000 km2 and a coastal line of 329 km accounting for one tenth of the total coastline of Guangdong province. So it’s very rich in marine resources. Following the coast of Jiangmen, one can see Langqin Bay Exotic Stones known as a Stone Forest on the Sea, the Stone Groves with inscriptions of poetry at Guanghai, the Flying Sand Beach with crystal sand grains and clear waves, the nature preserve for macaques at Shangchuan Island, Shadi Fishing Port, one of the four biggest fishing ports of Guangdong, the famous Wangfuzhou Beach Resort at Xiachuan Island, ?Yinzhou Lake Wet Land Park, tract after tract of mangrove forest, and the nature preserve for Chinese white dolphins at Dajin Island.
The shrine of St. Francis, a legendary missionary, is located on the beautiful Shangchuan Island, attracting large number of disciples.
In the southeast and northwest of Jiangmen region lie range after range of hills. Beifeing Mountain Rafting Resort and Fenghuang Valley Rafting Resort provide adventurous and thriller-seeking people with a good place to go.
In these lush hills lie Guifeng Mountain, Dayanshan Mountain and Gudoushan Mountain Forest Parks. Also hidden in them are some religions monasteries including Yutai Monastery, a sacred Buddhist spot first built during the Han Dynasty.
The plains in Jiangmen Wuyi region are fertile fields and present pastoral scenery. The 1000-hectare Xinhui palm leaf forest in Xinhui presents a most moving scene. Here, the broad and clear streams, the huge banyan tree full of life, and the lively birds constitute an elegant and serene landscape painting. The famous Birds’ Paradise once vividly described by the famous writer Ba Jin displays the charms of the southern scenery.
On this fertile and beautiful land, the forebears of Wuyi people, with their sweat and toil, built one village after another that is of speical characteristics of this homeland of overseas Chinese.
Scholars Village, located in the middle of Enping and ?on the bank of Jinjiang River, is famous for having produced over 280 provincial-level scholars and it reflects the rich rural Confucian culture of Wuyi’s countryside.
Gulao Township in Heshan is a typical land of rivers and lakes, dotted with little stone bridges and luxuriant banyan trees. In the evening, the fragrant smoke of cooking fires floating lazily up in the air is a fascinating sight. Small bridges over flowing steams lined with cottages are a portrayal of the land.
At Fuyue (Floating Moon) Village in Beidou Township, Taishan, there are dispersed a number of western-style dwelling towers. They incorporate Chinese and western cultural elements and embody the unique architectural culture of this homeland of overseas Chinese.
Other architectural gems include the Stone Village at Yunli, Enping, the ancient Chikan Town in Kaiping, and the Mei Clan Yard at Duanfen, Taishan. They are all different from traditional Chinese styles.
The villagers live a leisurely and well-off life and have developed their unique folk customs and manners like Fushi Drama of Taishan, the Lantern Fair at Bancun, Kaiping, the salons at Hetang and the fishing lights of Xinhui.
Jiangmen is also a famous land of martial arts. The world-famous Cai-Li-Fu boxing originated here.
Jiangmen, the No. 1 Homeland of overseas Chinese, and China's outstanding tourist city, boasts the Shang- and Xia-Chuan Islands known as the Oriental Hawaii, the Birds’ Paradise under the pen of the famous writer Bajin, the Kaiping diaolou and villages which are likely to be inscribed onto World cultural Heritage, and the ancient Yamen battlefield at Xinhui.
